INTRODUCTION: Objectives: This study was conducted with the aim of determining the status of using social networks and its relationship to emotional intelligence among nursing students.
METHODS: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 406 students of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences who were selected by census method. The data gathering tool was a researcher-made demographic questionnaire, a questionnaire on the status of social network use, and the Siberia Schering’s standard emotional intelligence questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 16, descriptive statistics and inferential statistics using Pearson correlation coefficient.
RESULTS: The average total score of the status of using social networks was 116.81±17.20 from the score range of 38 to 190, while the overall score of emotional intelligence was 99.27±11.48from the score range of 33 to 165 in the research units. The highest score of the emotional intelligence questionnaire and the status of using social networks was related to self-motivation dimensions and academic content sharing. On the other hand, there was a negative statistical relationship between the status of using social networks and emotional intelligence variables (r = -0.40 and P = 0.000).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Due to the negative relationship between the use of virtual space and emotional intelligence and the positive effect that the emotional intelligence component can have in establishing a proper relationship between nurse and patient, university authorities should have special consideration of students using virtual networks and help to protect them against damages caused by their sharp edge.
