doi: 10.14744/phd.2023.98975  Sayfalar 1 - 8
INTRODUCTION: Inpatient health institutions provide continuous service. Nursing service in these institutions continues on a shift basis. The mental difficulties of working on the shift in maintaining the profession of nurse have been shown in the literature before. This study aims to emphasize the possible psychological effects of working on a shift basis and the factors that may affect the nurse’s quality of life from a broad perspective.
METHODS: A total of 114 nurses working on shift (n=51) and not working on change (n=63) at Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Hospital were included in the study. The sociodemographic data form, generalized anxiety disorder scale-7 (GAD-7), patient health questionnaire-9 (HSQ-9), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PUKI), and Short Form-36 (SF) were filled out by the participants.
RESULTS: No statistically significant difference existed between the GAD-7 and HSQ-9 scale mean scores and the PUKI and SF-36 subscale mean scores between the groups with and without a shift. In evaluating the PUKI total score results, it was determined that the sleep quality of the participants in both the shift-working and non-shift-working groups was poor. According to the results of the correlation analysis, the PUKI total score averages of the participants showed a positive correlation with the GAD-7 and HSQ-9 mean scores. It was determined that the mean score of the SF Mental Component (SFMC) and SF Physical Component (SFPC) showed a negative correlation with the mean score of GAD-7 and HSQ-9 for the SFPC scores of the HSA-9 scale mean scores. The GAD-7 scale mean scores were found to be predictive of SFMC scores.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: On-shift working is ineffective on quality of life and sleep. It was determined that anxiety and depressive symptoms adversely affected the quality of life and sleep. With these results, studies on nurse quality of life and sleep quality need to be evaluated from a broader perspective.

doi: 10.14744/phd.2023.00187  Sayfalar 9 - 16
INTRODUCTION: Mitigating the health effects of climate change and ensuring social adaptation are considered among the new professional roles of nurses. It would be possible for nurses to manage the psychological reactions experienced in society toward the consequences of climate change only if they can direct their emotions to the right resources. This study aimed to determine nursing students' worry and hope levels about climate change.
METHODS: This cross-sectional design study was conducted with 260 nursing students in Istanbul. Personal Information Form, Climate Change Hope Scale and Climate Change Worry Scale were applied to the participants.
RESULTS: About 46.5% of the students participating in the study know global climate change, 58.5% know the effects of climate change on health, 70% follow the effects of climate change on health on the internet, and 68.1% of the students have no information about the institutions working on the effects of climate change on health. It was found that the participants had a mean of the hope scale score of 42.67±6.09 and a mean score of the worry scale of 33.72±7.83. Those who know climate change and its health effects, those who follow its effects on health, and those who know the institution working in this field have higher scores. A slightly significant correlation was found between the scale scores.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that the students who know climate change and its effects on health have higher worry and hope scores. The data can guide nursing students in coping with negative emotions and will contribute to the empowerment of future nurses by helping universities develop nursing curricula in this area.

doi: 10.14744/phd.2023.21957  Sayfalar 17 - 24
INTRODUCTION: When considered within the scope of measures and measures taken under pandemic conditions, women’s mental health and violence against women, which is a global public health problem, are affected in adapting to changing living conditions. Our study aims to determine the intimate partner violence (IPV) and mental status of women during the pandemic period and to compare the mental health of women and the situation of IPV.
METHODS: This study is descriptive relation seeking and was carried out between March and April 2021 through online using Google Forms. During the pandemic period, 204 women were reached to determine their anxiety, depression, and IPV status. The data were collected with a form that included the demographic characteristics of women, their exposure to IPV and the types of violence they were exposed to, the “Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7),” and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9).
RESULTS: It was determined that there was an increase in women’s exposure to IPV during the pandemic period, emotional violence, and controlling behavior were the highest, and normal-mild anxiety and mild-moderate depression were the majority in the GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scale sub-dimensions. In addition, it was found that anxiety and depression scores increased in parallel with the increase in physical, sexual, and emotional violence and controlling behaviors.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: As a result of this study, the problems experienced during the pandemic period caused an increase in women’s exposure to partner violence and anxiety and depression levels. It is noteworthy that IPV has an effect on the increase in anxiety and depression levels. In this context, our study will be a solid foundation for developing an effective psychological intervention for women during the pandemic period.

doi: 10.14744/phd.2024.04382  Sayfalar 41 - 49
INTRODUCTION: The study was aimed to determine the effect of the cyberchondria status and severity of the patients on their readiness for surgery.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 375 patients who received care in the surgical wards of a university hospital between February 10 and April 30, 2023, were included. Data were collected using the Cyberchondria Scale (CS), Cyberchondria Severity Scale (CSS), and the Pre-operative Assessment of Readiness Tool (PART). Data were evaluated by Mann–Whitney U test, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Mann–Kruskal Wallis, and linear regression analysis.
RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 38.0±9.7 years, and 54.1% were female. 59.2% of the patients stated that they spent more than 4 h on the Internet. The mean scores of the patients were 82.7±7.1 for the PART, 72.0±17.5 for the CS, and 33.0±8.6 for the CSS. Cyberchondria status was positively affected (p=0.026), and the severity of cyberchondria negatively affected pre-operative patient readiness. Doctor–patient interaction and dysfunctional Internet use positively affect readiness for surgery. Excessiveness had a negative effect, and distress had a positive effect (p<0.05).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: In patients who will undergo surgery, it was determined that readiness for surgery was high and cyberchondria status had a positive effect, while cyberchondria severity had a negative effect.

doi: 10.14744/phd.2023.83604  Sayfalar 50 - 56
INTRODUCTION: Patients undergoing renal dialysis complain of several psychological complications and poor sleep quality as a consequence of the procedure. This study aimed to identify the relationship between psychological status and sleep quality among Jordanian patients with end-stage renal diseases who are receiving hemodialysis.
METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational design was used. A convenience sample of one hundred four patients receiving hemodialysis at two main public hospitals in Jordan was enrolled.
RESULTS: Three-quarters of participants reported mild to moderate depression, 63.5% had mild to extremely severe anxiety, and 55.8% had mild to moderate stress levels. The results of the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) showed that most patients receiving hemodialysis had poor sleep quality. The results showed a significant correlation between the total global score of sleep quality and stress, anxiety, and depression (r=0.47, p<0.001; r=0.62, p<0.001; r=0.49, p<0.001), respectively. Higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress were associated with a higher severity of sleep problems.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Poor sleep quality is correlated with patients’ psychological outcomes; therefore, healthcare providers need to pay more attention to sleep quality in the assessment and nursing interventions in order to alleviate the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among patients undergoing hemodialysis.

doi: 10.14744/phd.2024.76258  Sayfalar 72 - 80
INTRODUCTION: The study aims to explore the dilemma of adolescents who experience self-stigma to quit drugs while undergoing drug rehabilitation.
METHODS: This study was used a descriptive phenomenological approach; semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 adolescent drug abusers in three types of study sites selected using a purposive sampling design. Participants consisted of adolescent drug abusers (10–19 years old), currently undergoing drug rehabilitation, experiencing high self-stigma, not having verbal communication barriers, and not having physical ailments. Data analysis was guided by Collaizzi’s approach to gain an in-depth understanding and analysis of participants’ experiences.
RESULTS: Two things that make drug-using adolescents experience a dilemma to quit drugs while undergoing rehabilitation are the emergence of motivation and feeling obstacles to quitting drugs. Motivation comes from within and outside oneself, whereas obstacles are felt in the form of fear of other people’s reactions and inability to control oneself.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: There are several considerations including the realm of self, family, and environment that make adolescents with self-stigma feel in a dilemma to quit drugs. The rehabilitation institutions must involve various parties comprehensively and sustainably, as long as adolescents start rehabilitation until they return to the community. Future studies regarding the correlation between the demographic characteristics of self-stigma and the dilemma of adolescents undergoing rehabilitation also the impact of self-stigma on self-control, motivation, and stopping drug use can be carried out involving female subjects to describe the intervention to increase adolescent’s self-confidence to quit drugs.

doi: 10.14744/phd.2024.01947  Sayfalar 93 - 102
INTRODUCTION: Depression is a mental health problem that many adolescents experience related to their immaturity of ability to manage emotions. This condition often makes adolescents seek escape through online games, thereby increasing the intensity of the game which can lead to addiction. This study aims to assess and describe the relationship between depression and online game addiction in adolescents based on the results of previous studies that have been summarized and examined.
METHODS: Searching for articles in this review using the Scopus, Proquest, and ClinicalKey databases were reviewed between January 2 and February 27, 2023. The inclusion criteria are (a) publication in 2019–2023; (b) publications in English; (c) available in full text; and (d) original research articles. The exclusion criteria in this study were (a) other documents in the form of book chapters, reviews, and conference proceedings and (b) qualitative research. The keywords in this literature identification were “depression” AND “online games” AND “addiction” AND “adolescent” OR “teenager” OR “youth.” The writing of this systematic review uses the PRISMA guidelines.
RESULTS: The findings of 11 studies reviewed show that depression can cause online game addiction in adolescents and conversely, depression experienced by adolescents can lead to online game addiction.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Depression has a reciprocal relationship with the incidence of online game addiction in adolescents. An effort is needed to improve effective coping skills for adolescents to prevent depression and online game addiction. Further research is regarding effective coping mechanisms to prevent depression and online game addiction in adolescents.
