Evaluation of group counseling for families of intellectual disabled children

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to assess the effectiveness of a group counselling for families of intellectually disabled children.
METHODS: This is a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test/post-test design. The study was conducted in Niğde Saruhan School of Special Education. The data’s were collected to use Family Assessment Device, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Problem Solving Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. For each one of parents in groups of 5-6 people, a total of 45-minute 6 structured group counselling sessions were made. To evaluate the data Simple paired t-test, Wilcoxon t test, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used.
RESULTS: Parents surveyed after the group process; significantly increase about their skills of problem solving, communication within the family, social support awareness and a reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression was observed.

Zihinsel engelli çocuğu olan ailelere verilen grup danışmanlığının etkinliğinin değerlendirilmesi

AMAÇ: Bu çalışma zihinsel engelli çocuğu olan ailelere sunulan grup danışmanlığının etkinliğini değerlendirmek amacıyla yapılmıştır.
YÖNTEMLER: Bu araştırma ön-test, son-test desenli yarı deneysel bir çalışmadır. Araştırma Niğde Saruhan Özel Eğitim Okulu’nda yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri araştırmacılar tarafından oluşturulan Bilgi Formu ile Aile Değerlendirme Ölçeği, Çok Boyutlu Algılanan Sosyal Destek Ölçeği, Problem Çözme Envanteri, Beck Depresyon ve Anksiyete Ölçek’leri kullanılarak toplanmıştır. 6 yapılandırılmış oturumdan oluşan grup danışmanlığı her biri 5-6 ebeveynden oluşan gruplara ortalama 45-60 dakika süreyle verilmiştir. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde Simple Paired t testi, Wilcoxon testi, Kruskal-Wallis ve Mann-Whitney U testleri kullanılmıştır.
BULGULAR: Grup süreci sonunda ebeveynlerin problem çözme becerileri, aile içi iletişimleri ve sosyal destek algıları anlamlı ölçüde arttığı, anksiyete ve depresyon belirtilerinin azaldığı gözlenmiştir.
SONUÇ: Bu çalışma sonucuna göre; zihinsel engelli çocuğa sahip ebeveynlerin sorunlarının belirlenmesinin ve onların psikososyal olarak desteklenmesinin önemli olduğu anlaşılmaktadır.
